Come to me!

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 v 19 “The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, “He is a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend to tax collectors and other sinners!” But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.”

John the Baptists lived in the wilderness and was said to be possessed by a demon. The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, “He is a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend to tax collectors and other sinners!” Then we hear Jesus pray “Thank you for hiding from those who think themselves wise and clever, and revealing yourself to the childlike. “The Father and the Son know each other completely, as do those whom the Son chooses to reveal himself to. Then Jesus says,
Come to me all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart.

“O Father thankyou for hiding these things from those who think they are wise and clever , and revealing them to the childlike.” Matthew 12 v 25

Life to a non-believer can be confusing. Bad people have lots of money, and good people die young. Just as John the Baptist ate sparingly and was said to be possessed by a demon, and Jesus ate and feasted and was called a glutton. But wisdom is shown to be right by its results. Should I always be doing housework, staying at home or should I be out playing golf? Should I be helping my daughter with some painting or working on this blog? When I played golf, I had a God conversation with one of the other players. When I was driving to my daughters, I saw a fox crossing the street. Wisdom is shown by its results.

Watching my grandchildren explore the world around them this summer I see their joy in finding a bug in our back yard. See the smiles on their faces playing in the river on a warm afternoon and going down the slide at the park. Do we have to know and be able to quote every verse in the bible? Do we have to strictly follow formal prayers and forms of worship to experience God? No, Jesus prays for us to be in the moment and like children enjoying life, to find joy in the Lord, and He will reveal himself to us.

And just when we are worried about our families, our friends, our work, our health and the state of our politicians and the health of the world, Jesus says “Come to me”. Particularly when you feel overwhelmed with life’s problems, “come to Jesus”. Because he is humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your soul. Just as in the Wednesday Worship of CrossWalk we find peace in the learning of breath prayers. The reason we worship God, to find rest for our souls.

Prayer: Heavenly Father thank you for revealing yourself to us in the events of our days as we trust you to be with us always and to find rest for our souls. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
