Sing a new song

Psalm 149 v 5 “Let the faithful rejoice that he honors them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds.”

Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song. For the Lord delights in His people, he crowns the humble with victory. Let the faithful rejoice that he honors them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds.” Praise God with their mouths and a sharp sword in their hands.

Over the summer I have had the privilege of looking after my grandchildren sometimes when they have a nap. They lie in their beds and often sing themselves to sleep. Until I read this verse, I did not realize that this was a joy that God appreciated too! The Lord enjoys his people singing a new song! Then what about the sharp sword? For our grandchildren their parents are trying to navigate the need for discipline for teaching them how to share, take turns, and good manners, saying please and thank you with a happy voice. I was also talking this week about the need for a consequence for an action that is meaningful to the child after they have made poor decisions. Alongside praise and rejoicing is loving discipline for all of us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father who rejoices when we rejoice but also guides us to make good decisions help us to sing today a new song! Amen.
