Fill the banquet hall!

Matthew22: 1-14 v 10 “So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests.”

Jesus told this parable about the Kingdom of Heaven. A king prepared a great wedding feast for his son. Many were invited to attend but they all refused to come. The King sent more servants to tell the guests that everything was ready, but the guests went their own way, some to their farms, some to their businesses. Others seized and killed the messengers. The King was furious and sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn the town. He told his servants to go out to the streets and invite anyone they saw. So, the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests.” When the King walked amongst his guests, he found someone not wearing wedding clothes. He had him thrown into the outer darkness. For many are called, but few are chosen.

I expect most of us, especially during the recent time of the pandemic, have looked forward to a special dinner or just a coffee with friends or family. Have cleaned the house, cooked a cake and then been disappointed when for many different reasons those invited cancelled. My response is usually to have an extra piece of cake but maybe I should have taken the cake to a homeless shelter. There might be people who do not appreciate “leftovers” even at the shelter, but we see from this parable that the King will sort them out.

“Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone that you see.” Matthew 22v 9

Prayer: Heavenly Father who gives us all we need, help us to share the good news with all those around us, to fill the banquet hall with good and bad, and leave the choosing to you. Amen.
