The Mountains Quaked!

Isaiah 64:1-9 v 3 “When you came down long ago, you did awesome deeds beyond our highest expectations. And oh, how the mountains quaked!”

OH, that you would burst from the heavens and come down., then your enemies would know the reason for your fame! When you came down long ago, you did awesome deeds beyond our highest expectations. And oh, how the mountains quaked!” You welcome the godly but are angry with us, who are not godly. We are all infected and impure with sin. Our righteous deeds are nothing but filthy rags. And yet Lord, you are our father. We are the clay, and you the potter. Don’t be so angry with us Lord. Look at us, we pray, and see that we are all your people.

Often Moses would go up the mountain alone to meet with God. The people had to stay at the bottom of the mountain. Sometimes it was covered in dark clouds and thunder would come from the clouds. During that time God was a real presence and the people wanted Him to come back. Even though they realized that they were still along way off the perfect people God wanted them to be they knew He made them and called Him father. They knew He could mold them, like a potter molds his clay. They asked that God not be angry and although He has the power to make the mountain quake, to look at us and see that we are your people!

“And yet ,O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter.” Isaiah 64 v 8

Today is no different. Despite all our good work we still make mistakes. Get angry when really God has more right to be angry then us. As we continue the advent journey, the power of God to do amazing things, to make mountains quake is wrapped up in the contrast with Jesus as a tiny baby.

Prayer: Almighty God who can move mountains but asks us to be humble and kind help us to show your love to those around us every day. Amen.
