Foolish?

1 Corinthians 1 18-25 v 21 “Since God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would not know Him through human wisdom, He has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.”

The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. So where does that leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters?  God has made the wisdom of the world look foolish.  Since God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would not know Him through human wisdom, He has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews and to the Greeks.

A heartfelt preacher and friend of mine often starts her teaching with a humble apology, not sure that she understands the passage chosen but trusts in the guidance of the Holy Spirit and uses words that are easy to understand. People who hear her are glad they came, and she opens their hearts to something new with her words. I am sure she would identify with Paul saying his words are foolish. But like Paul those foolish words are used to save those who believe.

As the scriptures say “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard he intelligence of the intelligent.” 1 Corinthians v 19

I too am studying the words of some of the great philosophers but find more comfort for myself and the world in the words of the bible. Human thinkers have no solutions to life, but God does. In His wisdom we find love, repentance and forgiveness demonstrated by Jesus on the cross.

Prayer: Almighty God who has given us the wisdom of the bible to help us live out our days on earth thank you. Open our hearts to listen for the truth in your words through Jesus Christ. Amen.
