1 Samuel 8;4-11, 16-20 v 7 “ Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “ for they are rejecting me, not you. They do not want me to be their King any longer.”
All the elders of Israel met at Ramah. They told Samuel he was old and that his sons were not like him. Give us a King. Samuel was displeased and went to the Lord for guidance. Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They do not want me to be their King any longer.” Do as they ask but warn them how a King will treat them. He will take slaves; your animals and you will be his slaves. Despite this warning they still wanted a king like the other nations around them.

Thousands of years ago the elders got together and asked for a King. Even though they were told it would cost them, in slaves, in animals and in their own servitude they still wanted a king like the other nations around them. There is comfort to be found in organization and hierarchy. We too all these years later are prepared to give away in taxes some of our money so that those who govern us can take charge of education, hospitals, roads and other infrastructure that makes our lives better. But are we giving too much responsibility to those decision makers? We have a responsibility to our King, to make sure those who make decisions for us do a good job for the earth and for all people and animals too. Be part of your community for the good of others and for the only King , our Lord God.
Prayer: Heavenly Father we pray for all those who govern that they make wise choices for all, in Jesus name we pray. Amen
