2 Samuel 1:1, 17 – 27 v 17 “ Then David composed a funeral song for Saul and Johnathon.”
David killed the messenger who brought the news that Saul and his son Jonathon had been killed in battle. He then wrote a song for all in Judah to learn. Oh, how the mighty hero’s have fallen! The bow of Jonathon was powerful and the sword of Saul did its mighty work. How beloved and gracious were Saul and Jonathon. They were swifter then eagles, stronger than lions. How I weep for you my brother Jonathon. O how the mighty hero’s have fallen.
It seems more common these days to not have a funeral or to have a small family gathering. For a king and his son defeated in battle great words were written to be sung by all in the land. We can learn from this that we can all take some time to write a few words about the passing of someone whether there is a public remembrance or not. I am still today supported by the stories I have heard at funerals over the years. To talk of the good things they have done, the skills they used for the benefit of all. To describe their character as you knew it. To admit to your sorrow for the fallen.

Prayer: Heavenly Father who supports us in times of joy and of sorrow help us to express our feelings at times of loss. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
