2 Samuel 7:1-14a v 13 “He is the one who will build a house- a temple- for my name.”
King David was settled in his palace. God had given him time to rest. David called Nathan the prophet and told him he would like to build a house for the ark which was still in a tent. However, that night God told Nathan, to tell David that He didn’t mind living in a tent. That David’s name would be great even though he would not build a temple, but out of his line, a direct descendant of David will make His Kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house- a temple- for my name. I will be His father and He will be my Son.
God talks in the Old Testament through the prophets. He gives instructions and precise details if followed lead to amazing successes in war, of survival in adverse conditions, and predictions of what is to come. He requires obedience, loyalty, and trust in His words. He often says that His ways are not of this world and as David in times of peace tries to think of things to do to please God, He gently reminds him that God is ultimately in charge and will tell us what to do and when and predicts that through His son we can learn to talk to Him and not any specific building.
