Killing the son

2 Samuel 18:5-9,15,31-33 v 15 “ Ten of Joab’s young armor bearers then surrounded Absalom and killed him.”

And the King gave this command to Joab, Abisha, and Ittai, “For my sake deal gently with young Absolom.” All the troops heard the command. So the battle began in the forest of Ephraim. Absolem was caught up by his hair in a tree. His donkey walked on and he was left hanging. Ten of Joab’s young armour bearers then surrounded Absolom and killed him. After the armies returned, they told the King of his victory and that all had perished including his son. The King was overcome with emotion. He went to his room and cried “O Absolom, my son, my son.”

The King gives orders to his top men, they give orders to those below them, each leader has those who follow his example and thus Absalom was killed. Despite his treachery towards his father David, he went to his room and wept for the lost son.

Families have their difficulties. As the children become adults, they have different opinions to their parents and tensions arise. But David shows us that despite the differences the loss of a child is still heartbreaking, whatever they have done. If you have differences with your adult children show them you still love them today.

” The King was overcome with emotion.” 2 Samuel 18 v 33a

Prayer: Heavenly Father who shows us the amazing love connection with your son, help us to have good relations with our adult children in Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
