John 6: 56- 69 v 63 “The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I (Jesus) have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
I live because of the living Father who sent me. I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?” The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I (Jesus) have spoken to you are spirit and life. At this point many of His disciples turned away and deserted Him. Then Jesus turned to the twelve and asked, “Are you going to leave?” Simon Peter replied “We believe, you are the Holy one of God”
Life has it’s us and downs and even for Jesus His ministry had some highs and lows. This is one of the lows. Many of his disciples turned away from Him and deserted Him because he said eternal life comes from the Spirit. Human effort accomplishes nothing. Living today and in Jesus’s time there is a strong belief that if you work hard, you will be rewarded. Follow the rules and you will live a good life. But no one on their own will accomplish anything. Belief in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, things that are unseen is the only route to eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. In partnership with God great things can happen.
Prayer: Heavenly Father we believe that true salvation comes through you, and you alone. Help us to trust in your way and your wisdom as we daily travel with you in this world before we meet you in heaven. Amen.
