What if the Lord had not been on our side?

Psalm 124 v What if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us?

Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives. Praise the Lord, who did not let their teeth tear us apart! We escaped from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free! Our help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth.

The book God Space by Doug Pollock that has been the subject of our Wednesday Worship meetings. In chapter six he talks of the power of good questions.” They invite people to search for answers, look in the mirror, and wrestle with the contradictions within their own belief system. They also communicate respect and create an arena where Christians and non-Christians can ponder life and its mysteries together. “Is it surprising therefore that this psalm starts off with a good question. What if the Lord had not been on our side?

In Our Daily Bread Devotional which I read every morning the bible verse was Zechariah 4:6-10 which also connected with this question and part of my wonderings for some years as I was looking for Jesus type miracles around me. These words stood out,” Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” This connected for me the importance to God of small beginnings. How important the journey is as we grow in faith. And how wonderful it is to journey with God, who released me from the trap of doubt to the world of wonder, free to ponder life and its mysteries. Small miracles are just as important as big ones. What a great reminder, as I continue to look for where God is working around me.

“Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. ” Psalm 124 v 8

Prayer: Heavenly Father who made heaven and earth, thank you for the wonder of your word found in the bible. For being on our side through the journey of life. Amen.
