2 Samuel 23 1-7 v 3b – 4a. “The one who rules righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is like the light of morning at sunrise.”
These are the last words of David. David the sweet psalmist of Israel. The spirit of the Lord speaks through me. The one who rules righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is like the light of morning at sunrise, like a morning without clouds, like the gleaming of the sun on new grass after rain. But the godless are like thorns to be thrown away, for they tear the hand that touches them.
Looking after a garden even now as winter approaches requires constant care. In the row of bushes to the side of my house that are now devoid of leaves I saw two large thorns that had grown up in the middle of the bush undetected. I put on my thick gardening gloves and pulled them out. So reading this passage from the bible today I understood the analogy that David used all those years ago, how thorns tear the hands if you touch them without protection. The morning sunrise, a clear morning sky and gleaming sun on new grass after rain are also things that today we can understand. Give praise to God right now for this wonderful world we live in. Our days may be short from this point, and we never know when our last words will be so make them feel like the light of a morning sunrise.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the wonderful world you created. We praise your name today for all you have given us and ask that you give us words for others that are like the sun on new grass after rain. Amen.
