Road to the Cross Last Supper

Luke 22 v 7-20 v 15 “Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins.”

The Festival of Unleavened Bread arrived. Jesus sent Peter and John ahead. Where do you want us to prepare it, they said? He replied” As soon as you enter Jerusalem, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters say to the owner, “The teacher asks; Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?” He will take you to a large room that is already set up. They went off to the city and found everything just as Jesus had said. Then He took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. The He said: Take this and share it among yourselves.” He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it into pieces and gave it to His disciples, saying “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”  After supper He took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and His people- an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.”

“For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.”
Luke 22 v 18

Each time you read a section in the bible new truths are seen. How often have you been excited about something that is coming? Jesus was similarly looking forward to sharing this meal with His disciples. Sometimes as I am sure with Jesus it is a bittersweet situation. The final meal at the end of a great vacation, the preparation of a meal for a group of friends at the end of a season of a sport or activity, a wedding, a funeral. The occasion is lovely, but it also signals a time for change. We look back at the good times shared and forward with hope. Could Jesus have been doing the same? Be thankful today for the good times shared with the hope for the future that was in Jesus’s heart too.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you today for the good things we have experienced this year. That even through sad times we learn more about you, your son and ourselves. And that there is always hope in you. Amen.
