Closely Watching

Luke 14: 1,7-14 v 1 “One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching Him closely.”

One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching Him closely. Jesus noticed that all who had come to dinner were trying to sit in places of honor. He gave them this advice. “Take the lowest place at the foot of the table. When your host sees you, he will say “Friend we have a better place for you” For those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Then he turned to his host “when you put on a banquet don’t invite those who can pay you back because that will be your only reward. Instead invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. God will reward you for inviting those who could not pay you back.

Our relationship with Jesus is a two-way relationship. As we journey in our faith to understand Him better, He is also watching us. This passage starts with the words the people were watching Him closely. Then Jesus speaks of what He was observing. First everyone wanted to sit in the best seats. Jesus pointed out how embarrassing it would be if they were asked to change their seats because others more important had been invited. He then advised the host to invite different people to a banquet who could not pay him back for rewards in heaven rather than of this world.

” Instead invite the the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind.” Luke 14 v 13

Jesus asks us to be humble, to look after others who have problems greater than our own. Think of how you can do this today. Jesus is watching us!

Pray: Heavenly Father who gave us riches so that we could share with those who have problems greater than our own, open our eyes to see where they are needed today, in Jesus name we pray, Amen.
