Joel 2:23-27 “Rejoice in the LORD Your God who watches over His people!”
In these few scripture verses in Joel, the LORD is telling the people of Jerusalem to rejoice. The people had just been through the devastating effects of the locust plague. The LORD will send rain to demonstrate His faithfulness to His people. He promises to give back to His people what they had lost. The autumn rains came, and the threshing floors were piled high with grain. The people had all the food they needed. The people were to praise God who had made these miracles happen in ages past. The Lord told the people that they would not be disgraced – that they would know that their God was among His people Israel.

This particular story reminds me of our Covid pandemic – a time when the world seemed to almost stop in its tracks. Some basic items on our store shelves were not available. The roadways were quiet. People became sick and died. And yet, God still watched over us. People recovered from their illnesses. The roads were busy again as we began visiting our loved ones again. Our recovery meant we could return to our previous routines. The shelves in our grocery stores were being filled again. And yes, the harvest was plentiful. These were the worst of times, and yet, God was faithful because He was among His people. We thanked God for restoring us again. Just like in the days of old, the wine presses overflowed with new wine! We sing praises to our Maker who makes these miracles for His people!
Prayer: Dear God, Faithful and True – we praise You, O God! We thank You for Your faithfulness as Your miracles have restored us. Our harvest overflows with goodness – with all that we need. In You, we live and move and have our being! In the name above every name, in the name of the Risen Christ we pray with great gratitude. Amen.
