Luke: 20:27 “Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees – religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead.”

The Sadducees were a group of conservative religious leaders who honored only the Pentateuch – only a part of the Bible Scriptures from Genesis through to Deuteronomy. They did not believe in a resurrection of the dead because they could not find it in these verses. So, they tried to trick Jesus with their questions about marriage. Their question was concerning a wife who married a man with many brothers. It was their custom that if the brother died, the bereaved wife was to marry the next oldest brother. They wanted to know whose wife will she be in the resurrection.
Jesus based His answer on the writings of Moses, who was an authority they respected. The story goes on to say that people will not recognize their spouses in heaven, but we must not think of heaven as an extension of life as we now know it here on earth. Our relationships in this life are limited by time, death and sin. Jesus affirms that relationships will be different from what we are used to here and now. You may want to read the rest of Jesus’s answer concerning the resurrection. Jesus wanted them to look at the bigger picture where we have life eternal. For we are the children of God and children of the resurrection. Isn’t it amazing that Jesus is the God of the living, not the dead, for they are all alive in Him.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to always think about the bigger picture in these stories about Jesus. Thank you God, for not leaving us as orphans – that we are Your children! Amen.
