The king?

Psalm 72: 1-15 v 6 “May the king’s rule be refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass, like the showers that water the earth.”

Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the King’s son. Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors. May the king’s rule be refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass, like the showers that water the earth. All kings will bow before him, and all nations will serve him. He feels pity for the weak and the needy, and he will rescue them.  Long live the king!

Some think the king in this psalm was an actual King, Solomon , others that the ruler of all is Jesus, and some think of ourselves as having power of others and as kings we should mirror “having pity for the weak and needy, and to rescue them.

I think all have a point to make and thus in the richness of scripture it helps us to understand the roles of others, Jesus and ourselves. It is important to pray for our current leaders, to have justice in their hearts. Jesus as our King is certainly refreshing like spring rain, as a human king is never that perfect. And then each one of us, in the corner where we live, has command of what we say and do, so having pity for the weak and needy, and then acting on that to rescue them are choices we can make. Then we can all say, “Long live the king!”

” May he reign from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.” Psalm 72v 8

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we pray for the kings in this world to have a heart for the poor and to spread justice in the world. We thank you for Jesus, our King. Help us to see the problems of the needy around us today and guide us to help in your name. Amen.
