Martha and Mary

Luke 10: 38-42 v 42 “There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

A young women named Marthe welcomed Jesus into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. Martha said to Jesus” Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

” But the Lord said to her, ” My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!” Luke 10 v 41

Being a worrier about the details I immediately identify with Martha, although I do try and be more like Mary. Jesus is clear, being first concerned about our spiritual health, listening and learning from Jesus, is what we should be concerned about most. It’s a funny thing the more I spend time reading the bible and praying, the more focused I am on getting the practical everyday jobs done. Do I still become stressed when I have lots of people over for a meal? Yes, but I also make sure I make time to talk to the people there, to have fun, to show them the love of Christ through my actions. Martha the practical one invited Jesus in, Mary showed us the importance of then listening to Him. Both had important roles to play. So if you have invited Jesus into your life remember to listen to him, as this is the most important thing to do.

Prayer: Holy God who sent Jesus to teach us more about you every day, encourage those we meet to invite Him into their lives. Then open all our hearts to listen to His words. Amen.
