Psalm 121:1-2 “I look up to the mountains – does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth!”
We are not sure who wrote this Psalm. We are told that it is a song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem in ages past. It was a song that expresses assurance and hope in God’s protection both day and night. God not only made the hills, but also the heavens and the earth as well. Many times in the Bible, we are encouraged to look up unto the hills.

The Bible tells us to look up – up to the hills and mountains. Moses went up to the mountain because he wanted to see God and ask for protection and guidance for his people. When we travel over the Rocky Mountains in Canada, we are in awe at its powerful structure. When the pilgrims of old traveled through the lonely countryside, they sought the Creator God for protection. When we travel throughout the countryside and the cities, we, too, need God’s protection. We can be assured that it is God’s mighty power that protects us. God is not only all-powerful, but He also watches over each one of us. This is something that we need, and we can be assured that God watches over our lives throughout our lifetime. This was God’s promise to the pilgrims heading off to Jerusalem and it is God’s promise for us today.
Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for watching over us as we journey through this life. As we look up to the hills, we have that assurance of protection and it gives us the confidence to move forward with Your guidance into those lonely stretches along our way. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
