Heirs and promises

Genesis 15:1-12. 17-18v 5 “Then the Lord took Abraham outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have.  “

The Lord spoke clearly to Abraham and although he did not at the time have any children his faith was strong enough to believe when God told him he would have many descendants.  He brought a heifer, a goat and a ram, and a turtle dove and a pigeon. The three larger animals Abraham killed and cut in half. Later as he was sleeping Abram saw a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the halves of the carcasses. Thus , God made a covenant with Abram, that the land would belong to his descendants.

Today because of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus as Christians God does not require sacrifices of animals unlike in this story early in the bible of Abraham. The fire between the animal carcasses represented a promise to Abraham. The Holy Spirit is often represented by fire so the common thread to having heirs to continue the family line and a promise from God is to obey his commands and by the power of the Holy Spirit great things beyond our imagination will occur.

“I, God, will protect you , and your reward will be great.” Genesis 15 v 1b.

Prayer: Almighty Lord thank you for giving Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice so that we may be promised heirs and an abundant life . Amen.
