Psalm 81: 1, 10-16 v 16 “But I would feed Israel with the finest wheat and satisfy them with honey from a rock”
Sing joyfully. Shout happily. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it. I let them go their own stubborn ways and follow their own advice. If they would listen and follow me, I would defeat their enemies. I would turn my power against their foes. I would feed Israel with the finest wheat and satisfy them with honey from a rock”
The opening of this psalm reminds me of my two-year-old grandson who has found his voice and likes to sing and shout happily. When outside in the back yard he sings, in his bed at night he sings, in the park, and in our basement. If anyone is around to hear him, they usually join in and as we have a tambourine and shakers in our basement often add them too. However, he is also two and the ‘terrible two’s” as they were called when my kids were growing up. They are evident as he struggles to show his independence playing with toys not understanding the need to share, to take his turn on the slide, and to hold hands when crossing the road for his own safety. All perfectly expected behaviors. The adults around him lovingly showing him and explaining all these new concepts.
Reflecting on this process I have also seen adults who stubbornly stick to old stereotypes of male proficiency in certain areas over females. Who experience mental fragility due to old wounds and organizational discord due to poor communication. We stick to what we think is right for our lives.

If only Israel would follow me.” Psalm 81 v 13
Today listen to God, who wants to help us with all these issues. To defeat our enemies, to feed us what we need and provide treats!
Psalm 81: v 16 “But I would feed Israel with the finest wheat and satisfy them with honey from a rock”
Prayer: Loving God thank you for knowing what we need, and we are sorry when sometimes we don’t listen and go our own way. Help us look to you, to sing and shout to you as you defeat our enemies. Amen.
