Disciples

John 1: 1-29-42 v 41” Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” ( which means Christ”)

John was telling his followers that someone would come who was greater than him. Jesus walked by and John told those around him that this was the man he talked about because when he was baptized the Holy Spirit descended on Him as a dove. The next day John again saw Jesus and said”” Look! There is the lamb of God” Two of Johns disciples started to follow Jesus. They stayed with Jesus for the rest of the day. One, Andrew, had a brother called Simon and he encouraged him to meet Jesus.

My Mum often said to me that I make things too difficult for myself. I have a very practical mind, and can see easily how to get from here to there but often can also see the downside of the situation and thus I become hesitant to start a journey or in trying to get “all my ducks in a row” get overwhelmed and bail. Thus, it is with my efforts to make disciples. Knowing well the scripture in Matthew here: –

Matthew 28:18-20

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

And seeing Jesus find the first disciples I don’t see any anxiety and endless pondering about who to ask. John was sent as a messenger; he repeated his message two days in a row when he saw Jesus and two men decided to follow Jesus. Then one asked a relative. And if you read on in this passage then others are asked directly and follow. Word of mouth connections. No advertising, no internet blasts. And then the knowledge in the passage from Matthew from Jesus “I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

“Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus.”
John 1 v 40

Declutter, simplify, talk to those around you. Life as a disciple and to make disciples is easy. Try it over the next few days.

Prayer: Holy God who sent His Son Jesus for all. Help us to have simple conversation with others so that they too will follow Him. Amen.
