Matthew 5: 21-37 v 37 “Just say a simple, “Yes I will”, or “No I won’t”. Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”
But I say if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment. Go and be reconciled to that person. When you are on your way to court with your adversary, settle your differences quickly. But I say anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. But I say that a man who divorces his wife unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. But I say do not make any vows. “Just say a simple, “Yes I will”, or “No I won’t”. Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”

One of the things I have been taught over the past few years of isolation is to enjoy the small things. The regular pace of life. Enjoying my breakfast. Taking time to read and meditate on the words in the bible. Watching the birds at our bird feeder. Washing the dishes. We read in this passage that anger is as offensive as murder. That thinking lustful thoughts is as bad as the act. That it is better to loose part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. For me the point I see is not to make life too complicated. Keep life simple. But I say do not make any vows. “Just say a simple, “Yes I will”, or “No I won’t”. Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”
Prayer: Holy God who sees into our hearts. Encourage us this week to take each day simply as it is. Answering questions with a simple yes or no. To be there for those whom we meet with kindness and love in your name. Amen
