Gushing Water

Exodus 17 :1-7 v 6 “I will stand before you on the rock of Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. “

At the Lord’s command the people left the wilderness and wandered from place to place. They eventually camped at a place with no water. They began to complain to Moses. Then Moses cried out to the Lord. The Lord said to Moses “Walk out in front of the people. Take your stick and strike the rock. “I will stand before you on the rock of Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. “So, Moses struck the rock, and water gushed out as the elders looked on. Moses named the place Massah Meribah, test and arguing.

In this passage are Moses, the elders and the people. Moses had a close and personal relationship with God. When he cried out to God , God answered with practical resources to solve his problem. Not with a trickle of water but gushing out of the rock. The elders, men in charge of others, were called to be close to the miracle God performed and listened to Moses call. The general crowd were concerned about their own immediate physical needs, and the needs of their family. They were thirsty and needed water and were angry at their leader. They formed an angry mob as Moses thought he was about to be stoned.

So where are you? Trusting God and listening to His voice knowing that He will stand beside you in all you do like Moses? Are you willing to follow a knowledgeable leader and do your part as a group to help the people you are travelling with? Or are you part of the crowd that becomes an angry mob as they worry about the dire circumstances they are in and demonstrate little faith in the leader and in God’s plan.

“So Moses struck the rock as he was told , and the water gushed out as the elders looked on . ” Exodus 17 v 6b

I expect like me you have taken on all those roles at different times. But today I am trying to grow to be more like the example of Moses and the good news of the New Testament as a follower of Jesus. To be wise, present, and kind. To trust God’s plan which is good. To look around for the help He is giving when I am troubled, and to be kind to those I meet on the way.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, sometimes it is hard to not focus on our immediate needs, give us courage to trust you in all things and at all times. Thank you for the support that you do send and open our eyes to see it. Open my heart to the needs of others around that need to see Your love like the water gushing from the rock. Amen
