Mark 10: 2-16 v 9 “Therefore Don’t let anyone separate what God has joined together.”
V 15 “ I can guarantee this truth: Whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom of God as a little child receives it will never enter it.”
Jesus is very firm here about divorce. Marriage sanctioned by God should not be separated. Later in the passage are the words Jesus spoke about accepting “God as a little child”.
When I was in my dating phase there was a popular song by Tammy Wynette. She used in a song the spelling of words that she did not want her children to understand when two adults were talking to each other. Sadly in her song she was talking about a divorce that she did not want to happen. For many different reasons marriages fail and the sadness that that brings to a family is seen in the song. Marriage is not something for the faint hearted it takes work, lots of work and a core belief “Don’t let anyone separate what God has put together”
Continuing with the relevance of the song, I must admit I used the idea of spelling out the words when my own children would get excited about something so that they did not realize what was being said. An example for us was going to the beach, so I would spell it out to my husband “Will you be ready to go to the B.E.A.C.H by 10am?” A handy tool that only lasts until your kids can spell, for a short time when they are truly children.

Jesus understood that a child has unique qualities too. The acceptance and love of a child for their parents is the kind of love that God demands. It is the kind of love that God gives a couple, and it should not be separated and is the link between these two passages, talking of divorce and accepting God like a child.
Prayer: Holy God, we come to you with the heart of a child today and ask that you continue to bless our partners in life. Amen
