“Don’t be afraid”

Matthew 17: 1-9 v 6 “The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground”

Jesus took Peter, and the brothers James and John up a high mountain to be alone. Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that His face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. Peter wanted to build each of the men a shelter. As he spoke a cloud came over them and a voice said “ This is my dearly beloved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to Him.” The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.” Jesus said don’t be afraid. Do not tell anyone about this until the Son of Man has been raised form the dead.

Peter, James, and John were shown and heard God saying that Jesus was His son. That was a really big secret to keep. And the reality of hearing God speak was frightening. It reminds me of the time that our now son in law asked our permission to marry our daughter.  My husband and I had to keep the secret until she had been asked. And when have you prayed for something and been overwhelmed by God’s answer? I must admit finding myself in Africa as a medical missionary inside a year from the time I thought about possibly going was a little frightening.  Hear Jesus’s words “don’t be afraid”

“As they went back down the mountain Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen.’ Matthew 17 v 9

Prayer: Almighty God thank you for showing us that you are all we need to be joyful and to do your work in this world. That your Son reassures us not be to afraid. Amen.
