Discussion

Luke 24: 13 – 35v 27 “The Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”

Two disciples were walking seven miles to Emmaus. As they walked, they talked about everything that had happened in the past few days from the fact that religious leaders turned Jesus over to be crucified to the fact that today some of the women had gone to His tomb and the body had gone. Suddenly they were joined by Jesus, although God kept them from recognizing Him. Jesus said to them you foolish people. Then He took them through all the Scripture concerning Himself. By this time, they were nearing the end of their journey. Although Jesus made as if to carry on, they persuaded Him to stay with them. As He sat down to eat, He took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.

“What things?” Jesus asked Luke 24 v 19

How could you know someone so well and not recognize them? I was at a school reunion, and someone introduced themselves to me and I did not recognize her. I had met her at a social event which was part of my new job as a newly qualified professional. I was trying to relate her to my school days, and it wasn’t until I had been thinking for a while where we had met when I suddenly realized it had nothing to do with my past at this school but the present where I was working! Then my eyes were opened. As Jesus talked to His friends, He went back over the past to explain what had happened, but it was only when He broke the bead, something they were familiar with from their present experience that their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. Then all the discussion had made more sense and they rushed back to tell their friends all the good news. And so, our spiritual journey involves lots of discussion of the bible and the significance of the things we have read. But it is our own experiences of Jesus, today that opens our eyes to a deeper meaning. As we see His helping hand in our lives , in our worship, and as we align what we do with His wishes we find peace here on earth and joy that passes all understanding.

Prayer: Almighty God, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ, who meets us on the road to help us understand the meaning of the scriptures. Open our eyes to the deeper meaning of life as we serve you every day. Amen.
