This is the account of the family of Issac, the son of Abraham. When Issac was forty years old, he married Rebekah. Issac pleaded with the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children. The Lord answered Isaac’s prayer. And when the time came to give birth Rebekah discovered that she did indeed have twins. The first one was very red at birth and covered in thick hair. The other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born. As the boys grew up Esau became a skillful hunter. Jacob had a quiet temperament preferring to stay home. Isaac loved Esau, Rebekah loved Jacob. One day when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau arrived home from the wilderness exhausted and hungry. Esau said to Jacob, “I’m starved! Give me some of that red stew.” “All right” Jacob replied,” but trade me your rights as the firstborn son.” So, Esau swore an oath, thereby selling all his rights as the firstborn to his brother, Jacob. Esau ate the meal, got up and left. He showed contempt for his rights as the firstborn.
Reflection
Our attitude matters to God. When we see the practical, God wants us to look to the good for all and maybe he wants us to lighten up and have a chuckle too! Gensis is the beginning of the bible and right from the beginning we see this story of the strong hairy firstborn, loved by his father for bringing home good food to eat. The second twin, born almost at the same time as he was holding onto his brother’s heel preferred to stay at home, and was loved by his mother. The firstborn, who sold his birthright, his title to all his parents owned to his brother for a meal when he was hungry! Doesn’t it make you chuckle! Brawn verses brain! And who do we remember as the fathers of Israel? Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! Lighten up when you make choices today and trust God that despite the practical things we see He is more concerned about what is good for us all and he will make it happen!

Heavenly Father, thank you for this story today that demonstrates your love and laughter in a mixed up world! Amen.
