Laban said to Jacob, “You shouldn’t work for me without pay just because we are relatives. Tell me how much your wages should be” Now Labon had two daughters. The older daughter named Leah, and the younger one was Rachel. Since Jacob was in love with Rachel, he told her father, “I’ll work for you for seven years if you give me Rachel your youngest daughter as my wife.” Agreed Labon replied. Finally, the time came for him to marry her. So, Laban invited everyone in the neighborhood and prepared a wedding feast. Laban took Leah to Jacob, and he slept with her. But when Jacob woke up in the morning- it was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob raged at Laban. “I worked seven years for Rachel! Why have you tricked me?” It’s not our custom here to marry off a younger daughter ahead of the firstborn.” Jacob agreed to work seven more years. A week after Jacob had married Leah, Labon gave him Rachel too.
Reflection
How our families come to be can often be complicated. My dad had two sisters who married two brothers, a friend ‘s sister married an ex- boyfriend of another of our friends, and today it’s all about swipe right or swipe left to meet someone. Scheming parents have been replaced with controlling computers? Even if you look at it as a romantic tale of boy gets girl in the end, you can feel the sequel coming even though Leah had no sparkle in her eye! God however works through the sometimes crazy decisions we make, as he always has a plan in his own timing for good.
Prayer Father in heaven who looks down at our decisions with love and grace, thank you for sorting out our lives for the good of ourselves and others. Amen.
