God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Acts 5 27-32 v 31-32 God used his power to give Jesus the highest position as leader and savior. He did this to lead the people of Israel to Him, to change the way they think and act, and to forgive their sins. We are witnesses to these things , and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

The apostles were bought before the high council. The high priests had given orders to never preach in the name of Jesus. Peter and the apostles replied” we must obey God rather than any human authority”. Jesus died and God put him in the place of honor at his right hand. The apostles were witnesses and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who serve Him.

We believe that there is only one God, so who is Jesus and the Holy Spirit? Christian life is a trinitarian business. How are three different beings connected as one? Here the apostles explain the relationship in the excitement of being witnesses to the process. Despite being told not to preach about it my the highest religious court they couldn’t stop, obeying God’s authority rather than man’s.

I have heard many practical explanations for this relationship. One being like a clover leaf, three parts joined as one stem to make the whole. Another like water, a liquid at room temperature, solid when frozen and steam when heated. All water but with different properties under different conditions. Both these examples have some merit but in this passage we see that each, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are separate identities and each has a different job in relationship to each other and to us, as they work together.

The Father says “This is what you have to do”. The Lord Jesus confirms this and walks with us and the Holy Spirit within empowers and enlightens us so that we can see what needs to be said and done. You find yourself able to tackle it!

Prayer: Holy Father thank you for showing us the way, for Jesus who walks with us and the Holy Spirit who helps us stay on course and complete the race. Amen.
