Words that stood out
While the Israelites were still in the land of Egypt, the Lord gave the following instructions to Moses and Aaron. From now on this month will be the first month of the year for you. If a family is too small to eat a whole animal, let them share with another family in the neighbourhood. Take special care of this chosen animal until the evening of the fourteenth day of this first month. They must take some of the blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal. The whole animal must be roasted over a fire. These are the instructions to eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the mel with urgency, for this is the Lord’s Passover. But the blood on the doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This is a day to remember.
Reflection
Traditions and core beliefs make up a huge part of who we are. Celebrations of all kinds have an order and are meaningful for all generations to attend and participate. Birthday parties, weddings and funerals each have their own order and process that changes slightly depending on your family origins. Some celebrations are unique to certain cultures and for the Jewish people, Passover is one of them that has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. Although as Christians we do not celebrate the Passover, it coincides with our Easter celebrations. For me what stood out and is significant to us today is that God met the Jewish people where they were, still in the land of Egypt. When we take time out of our regular day to celebrate God, he meets us where we are. God wants us to share our meals especially celebrations with others. Take care of the food you will eat. God notices when you decorate your door for Him. Celebrations are days to remember! Know that when you celebrate, God is there watching over you.
Prayer: Almighty God who is in all our celebrations we thankyou for showing us your wisdom through your word. As we celebrate the start of a new school year this week, we ask that you watch over all those who are worried about the new challenges that they face and give them the comfort that you are watching over them. Amen.
